FACEBOOK HACKERVISION | EXPERIENTIAL EVENT
Hackathons are a big tradition at Facebook, gathering the best developers from across the UK to a huge coding marathon. Allowing employees to experiment, innovate and collaborate in a fun day out. For year 2018, the team and I set the theme for London's Hackathon as "HACKERVISION", celebrating the invention of Television at its birthplace, the Alexandra Palace, the founding space of BBC. Everything from the venue, to the theme, to the interactions are well-thought through, aiming to provide a functional yet fun working environment for the hackers.
HACKERVISION
In 1936, the BBC launched the world’s first regular public television service from Alexandra Palace. A collection of visionaries, hackers, and renegades all came together to pioneer a cutting-edging, world changing technology. Year 2018, hackers are invited to code, create, invent and pioneer at the birthplace of Television.
Inspired by the transformative impact of technology, HACKERVISION are created – an immersive celebration of television, the original technological leap that transformed society.
EXPERIENCE
Greeted by a giant TV screen entrance, HACKERVISION guests literally stepped into the world of television, bringing our fond memories of TV to life with partial TV sets from famous entertainment shows hosting areas to work, hack, eat and play.
All are set around a giant retro TV that formed the central stage area, hosting presentations from key speakers and fellow hackers.
ENTRANCE
To create the illusion of entering the world of Television, we have designed a giant retro TV frame, dressed with metallic fringe curtain to mimic the static buzzing of Television, creating an dramatic entrance as guests arrive.
MAIN STAGE
Once the guest stepped into the space, they will see an epic looking stage set, mirroring the retro TV front entrance. A Giant Retro TV stage with projection screen for presentations and announcements. Lecterns are also dressed as a stack of VHS tapes, with fun TV-related puns,
eg: The Linux King.
TV SETS - MORNING SHOW
Guest are welcomed into the heart of television, first greeted by a Morning/ Evening show TV set
reception table. Welcoming guest with fresh news and information needed to explore the space. We have dressed the space with iconic talk show sets, comfy seating with wooden bench, and a London skyline background. By the evening, the set will transform into an Evening show set, featuring a different logo, and guests can collect their swag gift pack by the end of the day.
BACKSTAGE CONTROL ROOM
The Facebook team have requested they need a space to provide any sorts of technical support to the guests throughout the day, eg. extra cables, usb, etc. Therefore we came up with the idea of merging the practical usage of the space with the theme, dressing the space into a backstage area, with screens and controls, as if you are at the control room of a TV production studio. You may even find Facebook logos and reaction icons on the Test Cards as displayed on the screens.
HACK ATTACK
Here at the "Hack Attack", guests can get any stationaries supplies they need. I have designed reference one of the original TV sets from Art Attack and created a lay-flat stationary case with Hack Attack logo, and dressed with big paint brushes, just like the iconic set as we remembered from our childhood memories.
CATERING - FOOD & DRINKS
TV SETS - READY STEADY HACK
Ready Steady Cook is one of the longest airing cooking game shows on BBC. Two teams, red tomato and green pepper will compete in adjacent kitchens, red and green. Therefore we have recreate the two coloured kitchen sets and a 90s style logo, where hackers can grab their television lunch and dinners.
TV SETS - MOE'S TAVEN
For the bar area, we decided to bring Moe's Taven, from The Simpsons, to life. Scaled up the animate-graphic style entrance to 4m tall, with life size entrance way. I have also added extra detailing for The Simpsons lovers, featuring "the Spider Pig" footprints on the entrance ceiling (The Simpsons movie).
TV SETS - CENTRAL HACK
Central Perk, the cafes from Friends is one of the most iconic cafes in TV history. To create a cafe in an indoor space, we have bring in a faux shop front dressed with old pub table and chair sets, and branded logos "Central Hack" across the shop front. Not to mention bringing in vintage chesterfields to complete the seating area, just like where the main cast normally sit. Hackers can immerse themselves in the set and enjoy a quick bite with coffees in the area.

TV SETS - GAME OF THRONES
Speaking of one of the hottest phenomenon of television shows of recent years has got to be The Game of Thrones. With the finale season soon to be premiered, we have recreated the iron throne room setting as an extra photo booth for those who dare to claim the throne.
TV SETS - GREEN SCREEN
We have also brought in an green screen instant camera for hackers to take polaroids as souvenir. They may choose what sets they will like to be in, whether they would like to be in Central Perk with Friends, having a beer with Homer Simpson or landing on the moon. We have decorated the set as an backstage scene where you can see the photo-shooting equipments and stacks of TV showing some iconic television scenes since the invention of TV.
ENTERTAINMENT
TV SETS - GAME SHOW ENTERTAINMENT
To bring in some extra entertainment for the hackers, the team has recreated the iconic Crystal Maze set, with a cash grabber machine for them to enjoy and take their mind of work.
Theres also a leader board documenting their scores, for them to compete and win prizes at the end of the day.
TOUCH POINTS
ADVERTISEMENT TEASER
Other than all the TV sets and all the fun zones, we have also implement extra touch points for hackers to get the full experience of entering the world of television. Through out the day, advertisement teaser are designed to loop on the big TV screen, introducing the different fun zones in the space for guest to explore. It also provides announcement notice, eg: time for lunch/ dinner or important notice eg: Do not drink and skate (there is an ice-skating rail in the space)
SWAG & BRANDED LUNCH
With the invention of the TV came the invention of the TV dinner, which will serve as the inspiration for the foods served throughout.
For the swag item, I have also design swag t-shirts with stacks of TV, showing Facebook inspired test-cards. I have also implemented an retro 3D effect which you can view via using the red-blue spectacles, celebrating the technology of TV screens from muted TV to black and white to full colours to 3D and 4D.
